The 95% Footprint Question: How Are Your Feet Carrying You?

The 95% Footprint Question: How Are Your Feet Carrying You?

Hi Tucson friends! Geon here, your local shoe engineer at JGP USA (right here on Oracle Rd).

Over the past few months, I’ve met so many amazing people in our community, taken their footprints, and talked about how their feet contact the ground.

One thing has completely surprised me: More than 95% of people show some difference from a balanced footprint pattern. Nearly everyone’s feet carry weight in their own unique way! Sometimes one foot makes more contact than the other, or weight is concentrated in the heel, forefoot, or arch.

While a footprint is not a medical diagnosis, it’s a fantastic visual starting point to ask: How are my feet carrying my weight today? Is one side working differently from the other?

Every footprint is different. Examples of how weight-bearing patterns vary.

Why Do Foot Patterns Change?

Foot patterns change gradually over time due to age, long hours standing, past injuries, and daily habits. But one major factor we often overlook is the environment our feet live in every day: our shoes.

Adapting to footwear that is too narrow, unstable, or poorly matched can affect how our feet carry weight and how our body manages balance. Because our feet are connected to our ankles, knees, hips, and lower back, even small changes in our foundation matter over time. (I wrote more about that chain in Why Knee and Back Pain Often Starts with Your Shoes.)

Can Our Feet Find Balance Again?

In my experience, yes! When people consistently wear footwear that fits properly and offers stable, well-shaped support, I have observed visible changes in footprint contact and weight distribution.

Look through the photos to see! You’ll see examples of arches appearing more balanced over time. I’ve also included a personal example of my wife. A year ago, her big toes angled noticeably inward. After wearing JGP footwear, her left big toe now appears much more centered. (Note: These are personal observations, not medical diagnoses or promises of identical outcomes. Individual results vary.)
