The #1 Shoe Complaint at the Tucson Senior Expo: Foot, Knee, and Back Discomfort

The #1 Shoe Complaint at the Tucson Senior Expo: Foot, Knee, and Back Discomfort

At the Tucson Senior Expo we asked visitors one question: what are your main concerns with your current shoes? The answer checked most often was foot, knee, and lower back discomfort. That ache is not just the price of a busy day. Much of it comes from the hidden work your body does to stay balanced on an unstable shoe, and it starts from the ground up.

Hey Tucson! Geon here, your local shoe engineer at JGP USA.

What Tucson seniors told us at the Senior Expo

At last week's Senior Expo, every visitor to our booth could fill out a short card: "What are your main concerns with your current shoes or walking?" The card listed five choices:

  • Wanting to feel more confident and secure while walking
  • Foot, knee, or back discomfort
  • Arch comfort or posture concerns
  • Discomfort when walking or standing
  • Convenient, easy on and off design

The #1 answer was foot, knee, and lower back discomfort. Most of the conversations at our booth came back to the same three things: balance, fatigue, and pain. Many people assume this is just the normal price of a busy day, something that comes with getting older or with a long list of errands. But let's look at the interesting engineering behind it.

Why do your legs and back ache from standing still?

When we stand still, the physical "work" we do is technically zero. We aren't lifting or running. So why do our legs and lower back ache so much by the end of the day?

It happens because of the "Invisible Workout."

Our bodies constantly work behind the scenes to keep us from falling over. If our foundation (our feet) is in an unstable shoe, our muscles and joints work overtime to keep us balanced. We don't notice it in the moment, but hours later, we feel intense fatigue. On a properly balanced foundation, this invisible workload drops significantly.

If you stand for work or spend long days on your feet, I explain this invisible workout in more detail in Why You Are So Exhausted at 8 PM: Shoes for Standing All Day.

The root cause starts from the ground up

I often see people use knee braces or back patches without realizing the root cause starts from the ground up. An unstable foot creates a chain reaction through the knees, hips, and spine. That chain reaction is why the discomfort people checked on the card so often shows up in all three places at once: the feet, the knees, and the lower back. A brace or a patch can ease the spot that hurts, but it does not change the foundation the whole body is standing on.

For more on how that chain travels upward, read Why Knee and Back Pain Often Starts with Your Shoes.

The "soft shoe" trap

Also, while ultra soft shoes feel great at first, they create a wobbly environment that actually forces your body to work much harder to stay upright. Soft is not the same as stable. When I check a pair of shoes at the store, I look at three things before anything else:

  • Enough room for the toes to spread
  • A heel that stays put with every step
  • A base that does not wobble underfoot

I go deeper into this in Think "Soft and Squishy" Shoes Are the Best for Your Feet? Think Again!

My advice: don't accept daily fatigue as normal

Don't assume daily fatigue is something you just have to accept. Try switching to footwear that provides a stable environment and supports your natural alignment, and simply compare how your fatigue and pain levels change.

Please remember: in many cases, chronic discomfort in our knees, hips, or back can be traced back to our foot balance!

Question for locals: when you stand or walk for a long time, where do you feel fatigue first: your feet, calves, knees, hips, or back? That answer is a useful place to start.

If you would like to talk it through in person, visit JGP USA at 6458 N Oracle Rd in Tucson. You can book a complimentary one on one consultation, or browse the shoes we carry online first. And if you missed our booth, here is our thank you to everyone who came to the Senior Expo.

Have a steady and comfortable week,
